Jakarta — The tourism area of Lagoi in Bintan, Riau Islands will soon have a new airport. Developed by Bintan Resort Cakrawala (BRC) in cooperation with Sriwijaya Air, the airport is going to be completed by 2019. The developer will spend US$150 million on the construction, with the budget provided by Gallant Venture, the mother company of Bintan Resort owned by Salim Group. “We have already started to prepare the land and are now building the runway and [foundations for] the airport building,” Bintan Resort Cakrawala general manager Abdul Wahab said on Saturday (15/07). In 2025, the developer also wants to open an aviation school. “We want to train professional pilots from all regions of Indonesia,” Wahab said, adding that in 2025 an additional runway will be constructed to facilitate the school. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has welcomed the plan, saying that Bintan is still one of the most favorite destinations for domestic and foreign tourists. “The number of foreign arrivals in 2016 reached 2 million. With Bintan airport, air connectivity will be improved,” he said.
