Jakarta — A massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Padang, West Sumatra on early Friday (01/09), causing widespread panic. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Ageny (BMKG) said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 00:06 a.m., was 57 kilometers east of Muara Siberut in Mentawai, at a depth of 59 kilometers. A local resident, Andriza, 19, suffered a thigh injury after jumping from the second floor of a building and lending on a fence during the incident. The BMKG reported that the earthquake impacted Padang, Pariaman, Painan, Bukittinggi, Lima Puluh Kota, Tanah Datar, Solok, Mukomuko and North Bengkulu. Many people reportedly fled their homes in fear, while dozens of hospital patients were also evacuated. Muaro Padang also evacuated 1,428 prisoners from the cell blocks. There have been no immediate reports of serious damage and no tsunami warning.
