Jakarta — A student of the University of Indonesia (UI), Catherine, was among the five winners of the 4th annual ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Youth Debate held in Bangkok, Thailand on September 4-6. The event, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. State Department, was held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the U.S.-ASEAN relations. According to a press release, the competing students from each 10 of the ASEAN member states exchanged views on human rights issues in the region, including the women’s rights and environmental protection. “Human rights is a crucial issue that needs to be discussed more often, especially by the youth,” said Catherine. “The AICHR Youth Debate was an opportunity for me to learn more about and discuss various thoughts and perspectives on human rights issues with youth from all accross the region.
