Jakarta — The government is preparing state trading firm PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PT PPI) to become the sole exporter of semi-processed rattan in case there is an oversupply of the commodity in the local rattan industry. “If there is oversupply, the only institution allowed to export is PPI,” said Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita on Tuesday (03/10). He said the Trade Ministry would establish a joint team, the members of which comprise representatives of the Indonesian Handicraft and Furniture Association (Himki) and the Indonesain Rattan Businesspeople Association (Apri), to solve various problems related to rattan. Among the task of team is to research the supply and demand of rattan, he said, adding that the information on the issue would be published online so that could be easily monitored A trade ministerial regulation prohibits the export of raw rattan and semi-processed. The export ban, however, has reportedly caused oversupply in the domestic market. Enggartiasto said the government was preparing the mechanism for the rattan exports. “If there is an agreement, we will issue a trade ministerial regulation,” he added.
