Jakarta — The Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee (INASGOC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it plans to recruit volunteers and pay them a stipend for the Asian Games. “The information circulating about paid volunteers is not true,” INASGOC chief Erick Thohir said in a statement on Sunday (07/01). Erick said the committee had welcomed the first batch of volunteers in September last year and they would help out at the Asian Games Invitational Tournament from February 10 to 24 and the main event in August. He added that the Games needed more volunteers and they would have a new registration drive on Jan. 18. Erick said the committee’s human resources department would be the only authorized agency to recruit them. “We do not use any outside agents or coordinators to recruit volunteers.” Information about paid volunteer registration for the Games, which circulated online, claimed that the committee would pay each volunteer a daily allowance of Rp 600,000 (US$44.70) per day. Erick advised the public to find information about the Games on its official website: www.asiangames2018.id.  The committee said the Games would need more than 20,000 volunteers to help out the quadrennial sporting event. It is set to welcome more than 12,000 athletes and officials and more than 5,000 media outlets.
