Jakarta — The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) issued a flood warning for Jakarta on Monday (05/02) as the Katulampa Dam in Bogor, West Java is likely to overflow. The Jakarta government urged residents living on the river banks to evacuate their households, since several areas in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta and Rawajati, South Jakarta are already overspread with water. As municipal workers are clearing the clogged Manggarai water gate in South Jakarta, a dozen trucks have carried landfill sites trash brought to the gate by Ciliwung River, MetroTV reported. The areas that can be flooded on Monday evening are Srengseng Sawah, Rawajati, Kalibata, Pangadegan, Pejaten Timur, Kebon Baru, Bukit Duri in South Jakarta, Balekambang, Cililitan, Cawang, Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta. The river has its source in Bogor. Torrential rains in Greater Jakarta area and Bogor caused landslides in at least four places in Bogor’s hilly Puncak region on Monday morning, BNPB spokesman Sutopo Nugroho said. At least two persons died in the landslide, and rescue operations are difficult due to rain and limited visibility. Excavators and fire engines have been deployed to the sites. The rainy seasons in western Indonesia, including Jakarta and West Java will reach its peak in February, Sutopo said.
